Chennai has one of the most famous coastal roads in India on its doorstep, and a string of hill roads within a day’s ride. Here are eight weekend rides from Chennai, from an easy coastal breakfast run to the 70 hairpins of Kolli Hills.

Coastal rides
1. Mahabalipuram on the ECR
The East Coast Road leaves the city and runs beside the sea to Mahabalipuram, with its Shore Temple and rock-cut monuments (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). An easy ride, best early in the morning.
2. Puducherry on the ECR
Continue down the ECR to Puducherry: the French Quarter, cafes and the promenade. It’s the classic Chennai weekend ride. The ECR is fast in places, with villages and crossings, so watch your speed.
3. Pulicat lake
North of the city, a large lagoon known for flamingos and other migratory birds in winter, and the old Dutch cemetery. A quiet change from the busy ECR.
Hill and forest rides
4. Nagalapuram
Just across the border in Andhra Pradesh: forest streams and pools reached on foot. Go with a group, and don’t enter the water after heavy rain.
5. Gingee fort
A sprawling fort on three hills, once called the “Troy of the East”, near Tiruvannamalai. Climbing it in the heat is hard work, so start early.
6. Javadhu Hills
A quiet range near Vellore and Tiruvannamalai, with winding roads and few tourists.
7. Yelagiri
A small hill station with a ghat road of 14 hairpin bends. It’s a popular ride from both Chennai and Bengaluru — brake before the bend, not in it.
8. Kolli Hills (a long weekend)
Near Namakkal, the road up to Kolli Hills has around 70 hairpin bends, one of the most famous twisty roads in India. Ride it slowly: the bends are tight and steep, and there are buses coming down. The Agaya Gangai falls are a highlight.
Tips for riding out of Chennai
- Heat and humidity: start at dawn, carry water and rest in the shade in the middle of the day.
