Bengaluru to Coorg by Bike: Route, Stops and Riding Tips

Coorg (Kodagu) is one of the most popular long rides from Bengaluru: coffee estates, misty hills, Tibetan monasteries and ghat roads that turn emerald in the monsoon. Here’s how to plan the ride.
Before you go: distances and times are approximate and depend on your start point, traffic and stops. Road conditions in the Kodagu ghats can change quickly in heavy rain — check before you ride.

The route: Bengaluru → Mysuru → Kushalnagar → Madikeri
Leg 1: Bengaluru to Mysuru (about 145 km)
Important: motorcycles are not allowed on the main carriageway of the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway. Use the service roads alongside it, or the old highway through the towns. Leave early to avoid the city traffic at the start; the service roads can be slow in places.
Leg 2: Mysuru to Kushalnagar (about 90 km)
From Mysuru, ride west towards Hunsur and Periyapatna. The road becomes more rural and more fun, with farmland, coconut groves and small towns.
Just before Kushalnagar is Bylakuppe, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. The Namdroling Monastery and its Golden Temple are a peaceful and beautiful stop.
Leg 3: Kushalnagar to Madikeri (about 30 km)
The last stretch climbs into the hills through coffee estates, with curves that make the whole ride worth it. Watch for buses and trucks on the bends, and for loose gravel and wet patches under the trees.
Alternative: via Hunsur and Gonikoppal
If you’re heading to southern Kodagu (Virajpet, Gonikoppal or Nagarhole), turn south after Hunsur instead. The roads through the forest edge are beautiful but have wildlife — don’t ride them after dark.
What to see in and around Madikeri
- Raja’s Seat: a garden viewpoint over the valleys, lovely at sunset.
- Abbey (Abbi) Falls: a short walk from the parking area through coffee plantations, strongest after the monsoon.
- Talakaveri and Bhagamandala: the source of the Cauvery and the temple town below it, about 45 km from Madikeri on a winding hill road.
- Dubare elephant camp: near Kushalnagar, on the Cauvery.
- Coffee estates: many homestays offer plantation walks. A Coorg homestay is part of the experience.
Riding the Coorg ghats in the monsoon
Kodagu gets very heavy rain from June to September. It’s beautiful, but:
- Landslides and road closures can happen during intense rain, especially on ghat sections. Check the news and ask your homestay before setting out.
- Visibility drops fast in mist and rain. Use your headlight, slow down and increase the gap to the rider ahead.
- Moss and leaves make the edges of the road slippery. Stay off painted lines and avoid sudden braking.
- Leeches are everywhere in the wet season if you walk in the estates. Tuck your trousers into your socks.

Riding to Coorg as a group
