Sunrise Rides Near Bengaluru: Nandi Hills and 6 Quieter Alternatives

There’s nothing quite like leaving a sleeping city at 4 am and watching the sun come up from a hilltop while your engine ticks as it cools. Bengaluru is surrounded by granite hills that are perfect for exactly this. Here’s how to do Nandi Hills well, and six alternatives when you want a quieter morning.

Nandi Hills (about 60 km)

Nandi Hills is the default sunrise ride for a reason: an easy, fast ride up NH44, a smooth ghat road with gentle hairpins, and, on the right morning, a view of the sun rising over a carpet of cloud.

How to do it well:

• Leave by 4:30 am from central Bengaluru on a weekend. The gates usually open around 6 am, and the queue of bikes and cars builds up well before that.
• Best season for clouds: the cool months from about November to February, especially after rain.
• Dress for the cold. It can be much colder on top than in the city. A thermal layer under your jacket helps.
• Go on a weekday if you can. It’s a completely different experience.

1. Avalabetta (about 95 km)

The hilltop near Chikkaballapur with the overhanging rock viewpoint. Further than Nandi Hills, but far quieter, and the sunrise is just as good. Leave by about 4 am to be on top in time.

2. Skandagiri (about 65 km)

Skandagiri, near Chikkaballapur, is a sunrise trek, not a ride to the top. You ride to the base in the early hours and hike up in the dark. Treks here need an advance booking through the Karnataka forest department’s official eco-tourism portal (Aranya Vihaara); walk-ins aren’t allowed and weekend slots fill quickly. Carry a head torch and water.

3. Makalidurga (about 60 km)

A hill fort near Doddaballapur with views over the Gundamagere lake. The hike up is moderate; start in the dark to reach the top for sunrise, and go in a group.

4. Anthargange (about 70 km)

The boulder hill outside Kolar is a favourite for night treks and sunrise, with caves to explore on the way. Stay on marked paths and go with someone who knows the trail.

5. Hesaraghatta lake (about 25 km)

Not a hill, but the closest sunrise ride from the city: a wide lake and grasslands on the north-west edge of Bengaluru, full of birds in the early morning. Perfect when you want a short ride and to be back home for breakfast. Keep to the roads, respect the grassland conservation area and keep noise down.

6. Devarayanadurga (about 70 km)

A forested hill near Tumakuru with temples at the top. You can ride most of the way up, and the forest road climbing through the mist on a winter morning is special. Combine it with a breakfast stop on the way back.

Riding in the dark: safety tips

Sunrise rides mean riding the first hour in the dark, often on highways with trucks. A few things matter more than usual:

• Be seen. Wear something reflective and make sure your tail light and brake light work.
• Check your headlight is clean and correctly aimed. Carry a spare fuse.
• Watch for fog. In winter, patches of fog on NH44 and the Tumakuru Road can cut visibility suddenly. Slow down well before you enter it, and keep more distance from the rider in front.
• Stray animals and unlit vehicles are common on rural roads before dawn.
